February 27, 2020
Somerset Academy Canyons (SAC) held its 7th annual Greek Day for 6th-grade students on Thursday, February 27th. Students were dressed in togas wearing leafy crowns as part of their costume for the day.
Students participated in a series of Olympic and intellectual events. The outdoor events consisted of a “dizzy-bat” race, 30-yard dash, football throwing, relay race, and knockout. Greek captains brought their navies to war with a game of battleship. Students wrote odes to the gods in the form of haikus. In teams of four, students tested their wits in a game of ancient Greek trivia. Students then participated in games of Pictionary.
“I’ve learned about the story of Iris and that there are more Greek gods than I knew before” Taylor Fossen, a 6th-grade student said.
Students ended their days with a Greek lunch that began at 2:00 and ended at 2:30. The lunch consisted of grapes, mandarin oranges, black olives, chips, cake, grape juice, and apple juice.
“It has been fun because we’ve been learning different things about Greece and doing different things that relate to them” Rosspatrick Cumiskey, a 6th-grade student said.
