Science National Honor Society usually hosts its own beach clean-up every year, but this year the group teamed up with 4Ocean, an organization dedicated to protecting our environment by removing trash from our oceans. On October 14th, 125 people came to participate at Deerfield Beach, and through the hard work of everyone involved, 3 large trash-can size containers were filled with waste by the end of it. Items found included old boogie boards, shoes, and chairs. However, the most common items included cigarette butts and plastic straws.

4Ocean is an organization started in January 2017 committed to cleaning up the excessive amount of trash in our oceans. While primarily centered in Florida, they are starting to expand their efforts to other countries. To help support their clean-ups, they sell a bracelet made entirely from recycled glass and PET (polyethylene terephthalate, a synthetic resin) from plastic bottles for $20 (reef.com). According to their website, 4Ocean removes one pound of trash from the ocean for every bracelet bought, having already removed and disposed of over 170,368 pounds of trash around the world.
