The Cougars Finally Have a Home

Students enjoy their first day in the new gymnasium.

The new gymnasium opened for classes on Wednesday, September 20th. In June 2015, construction for the gymnasium began under the leadership of former principal Mr. Fernandez.

When Somerset Canyons opened, it opened without a gym. In the beginning, there were not enough funds to build a high school building and a gymnasium.

Over the past two years, the construction continued while students and teachers watched. Recently, the workers polished and laid flooring in the two-story building. The second story holds offices, work out rooms, and an aerobics room. The first floor has locker rooms and the basketball court.

The completion of the gym is a very big deal at Somerset Canyons because the school has gone without one since it opened. For the past few years, gym classes met outside on the field, and the school was unable to host home games for volleyball and basketball.

The first home volleyball game will be this Wednesday, September 27th. The JV game will kick off at 6, followed by the varsity game at 7.
