Friday, September 21st, our National English Honor Society chapter held its first poetry slam after school from 4:30 to 6 pm.

Typically, poetry slams are competitions in which people use poetry to communicate their beliefs on topics they are passionate about. It is often judged, and a winner is determined.

This particular event, however, was intended to be just for fun and involved two types of passion: the heavy-hitting, and the lighthearted. Some poems shared that evening touched on topics of love, identity, and the culture of our society.

When asked about the slam, attendee Shayna Lefrak said, “It was a really great experience where we students and peers could share some of our favorite poems and discuss their importance and impact. [It was] very impactful and very sophisticated. I had a blast!”
